#### Connection to Research
 The presentation interweaves protist interactions with expert reaction commentary by Duke University researcher Dr. Jean Philippe Gibert. Students gain novel insight into the biological significance of these interactions, and learn some new vocabulary related to ecological research. 
#### Research Background
 This unit focuses on **protists:** the traditional way of grouping small, oftentimes microscopic, organisms, that do not fit into other kingdoms like animal, plant, fungi, or bacteria.  Modern genetic analysis of things formerly classified as protists now shows that this “catch-all” group is actually made up of animals, plants, and completely unknown groups. Modern **taxonomy** (the science of classifying organisms) no longer uses kingdoms.  However, these traditional categories are still very useful for helping students grapple with the messiness of biodiversity by recognizing shared traits within groups of related organisms.  

Dr. Gibert uses protists to study microscopic interactions such as predators eating prey and how temperature affects the rate of prey capture and overall stability of the experimental ecosystems-in-a-beaker. One goal of this research is to model how a warming planet will affect overall CO2 production and other ecosystem dynamics, scaling from very small to global perspectives. As the total mass of protists is about 65 times greater than the mass of all humans on Earth, understanding how climate change impacts microscopic organisms is very important to understanding the broader picture of how greenhouse gas emissions will impact the planet.  

This unit gives a unique window into the behaviors of bizarre creatures, fantastic evolutionary adaptations, and cutting edge research through a fun vehicle. This is meant to be a starting point for deeper curiosity and independent exploration of the microscopic world.
