Colourful Solutions: Chemical Engineering Dyes to Brighten Lives
Grades
6, 7, 8
Students will learn to think like chemical engineers as they delve into the dye technologies that allow us to express ourselves through colourful clothing. They will read and discuss complex texts, analyse concept maps and graphs, and develop an appreciation for indigenous (Māori) dye technology.
Alignment summary( Target)
Lesson 1
In Part 1, students will work independently and in groups to extract information from complex texts about each technology and complete concept maps of the chemical processes involved.
Bioinspired Design: Looking to Biology for Better Solutions
Grades
6, 7, 8
Students will identify a problem with an existing product and investigate biological functions to inspire a product redesign. Through independent research using AI bots and scholarly sources, students will gain a new perspective on STEM, biology, and the human interface between.
Alignment summary( Connected)
Lessons: 2, 3, 4
In lessons 2-4, students will dive into scientific literature, and other web-based sources to learn more about the product problem they've identified and biological models with analogous functions to the desired solution. They will then need to summarize and present their process and (re)design proposals.
